Minimum Computer Requirements

Albany Technical College is prepared to help you successfully complete your online course! We provide online resources and timely technical support to assist our online students. However, there are specific computer software, Internet browser and hardware requirements that you must ensure you have. Students must have access to a computer. Cell phones, tablets, iPads, etc. are not recommended for use in online courses and should not be used. Students must also have Internet access; DSL or cable connection is required. Students must be certain that they have all the technical requirements and ensure their computer meets the minimum hardware and software requirements to be in compliance with the online platform, Blackboard Learn. Complete the steps below before beginning your online class(es):

Browser Check

Help and Resources

From the Albany Tech Blackboard homepage http://albanytech.blackboard.com, click the Test your Browser button on the Browser Test module. You want to see green checkmarks beside the components. If you see a red circle with an X, you must install those components. To install, see the information below about Plugin Downloads. In addition, you must disable Pop-Up-Blockers to ensure that you can Display an Alert and Pop-up from the Blackboard site.

Review the Common Third Party File Types section and try downloading the samples. Also, notice the Browser Test page has two additional tabs: "More Information" and "Other Tests". These tabs are available if you need more information or need to run further tests.

Help and Resource

Help and Resources On the Browser Check, if any of the components had the red circle with an X you need to install that specific component. Ensure your computer meets the necessary requirements and you are using a Blackboard Supported Browsers. Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox is recommended.

If you are having technical issues, clearing your browser cache will resolve many issues! Also, change browsers to see if you get the same result in a different browser. If your computer meets all requirements and you are not able to solve your technical support issues, submit a Helpdesk Request Form (from the Help and Resources module). Some technical problems have to do with the student's particular Internet Service Provider (ISP) or with his/her own hardware or software. In some cases, students will have to contact their ISP for technical support. Albany Tech cannot resolve problems with your personal hardware, software, or Internet service.

If you experience major technical difficulties with your computer, you may go to the campus and use a computer in one of our open computer labs, library, or Academic Achievement Center to complete your coursework. Be sure to check lab hours before making a trip to the campus.

Course Hardware/Software Requirements

In addition to the general computer requirements, some courses have additional hardware and/or software requirements. Read our course syllabus and make sure you have all requirements. Also, this document indicates if you are required to come on campus or have an assignment proctored. Most courses require at least one proctored event/exam during the term. A proctor is a person that supervises an event/exam. Albany Tech proctors do not charge for proctoring Albany Tech students; however, other proctors may charge. You are responsible for any expenses that may be incurred to secure an approved proctor.

You will notice that many courses require Microsoft Office desktop applications. As a currently enrolled college student, you can download a free version of the Microsoft Office Suite through your college student email account.
